URBAN HEALTH INITIATIVE

Sharing of Family Planning Methods

Urban Health Initiative (UHI) project is being implemented by Sharnam Sansthan in 45 urban slums of Aligarh city. Sharnam Sansthan entered into partnership with UHI to implement client outreach and community mobilization for family planning in identified slums of Aligarh.  The organization reached a population of 162,375 across 45 slums with family planning information and counselling through its dedicated outreach team comprising 8 outreach workers and 78 peer educators. The outreach team attempted to reach each and every eligible person in the slums and made concerted efforts to increase service and supply access and utilization.

  UHI Goals

  • To increase contraceptive use, by improving access to quality family planning services; and thereby reduce unplanned pregnancies and abortions, and improve maternal and infant survival.
  • To initiate and strengthen systems and strategies that support continuous improvements in urban health services and their   utilization

Expected outcomes and results

  • Increased contraceptive prevalence or use, especially among urban poor.
  • Increased quality of reproductive health and family planning services at targeted sites.
  • Increased access to a broad range of contraceptive supplies and services.
  • Increased demand for contraceptive services and supplies.

Actions taken by Project Team :

Meetings with frontline ICDS functionaries were conducted to solicit their support in promoting family planning acceptance in the slums, and to ensure a collaborative working environment.  Peer educators formed contraceptive users’ groups and organized regular meetings to exchange experiences on family planning use, and to encourage potential clients to accept methods.

Information dissemination by displaying FP poster on Auto Rickshaw

Innovative strategies to reach men included meetings of rickshaw pullers to counsel them on benefits of family planning. Other topics like education and importance of cleanliness and sanitation for better health were also discussed in these male group meetings.  Rickshaw pullers gathered in good numbers and sought clarifications on several misconceptions related to contraceptive use.

Sharnam Sansthan worked with rickshaw pullers as a medium to publicize fixed service delivery days, wherein placards announcing the location and timing of male sterilization facilities were placed on the rickshaws. Announcements were also made through sound amplifiers used on rickshaws to reach a large audience.  Sharnam Sansthan reported a continuous increase in the number of family planning users over time, particularly for female sterilization, IUCD and DMPA

Post partum and Post abortion integration is a strategy where clients were to use any contraceptive method immediate after delivery or abortion to prevent unwanted pregnancy. All pregnant women in slum areas are listed and counseled for opting any FP method as per their need and choice, immediate after abortion or delivery.

During the month of Feb’14, about 1653 women were reported pregnant in project area of Sharnam Sansthan and 232 deliveries were registered and counseled by Peer Educators. After regular follow up, 111 women have taken Family Planning services. On other hand out of 63 abortions during the month 19 women adopt family planning. In this way 47.84 and 30.15 percent post partum and post abortion cases have adopted family planning services accordingly.

For ensuring qualitative family planning services for clients,  UHI has tied up with government hospitals and some prestigious Pvt. Health Service Providers. Project unit of Sharnam Sansthan played an important role of counselling & convincing to MWRA (Married Women in Reproductive Age (15 – 49 yrs) for taking FP services on fixed service delivery days at any prescribed service center for availing through trained doctors and at nominal rates.
